Our films foster a deep human connection with design; making the abstract accessible and encouraging users and clients to engage with and invest in a space. As well as capturing the beauty, form and style of a project, we tell the story of its making: the materials, process and people behind it. We do this through close observation and continual conversation - with our clients and each other - making our respective roles as director and director of photography indistinguishable, and ensuring a strength of focus and artistic vision.
We are fascinated by the relationship between humans and space, and with curiosity and an open mind, uncover and capture the moments and details that bring a place to life. The people who use and interact with these spaces play an essential role; our films and their subjects are brimming with life, infused with humour, and profoundly engaging and inquisitive.
Our approach to filmmaking is creative, considered and collaborative. We want to tell a fuller story, building a narrative around a team, an idea and a project that the public can connect with. We want to deepen their understanding of the passion, expertise and hard work that goes into these designs - into the structural, material and spatial choices that are made - so that they might perceive them differently and experience them in a new way. Our films serve as a complement to the detail and practical imagery required in attracting new clients, taking a step back from the specifics to offer a moment of quiet - but one that speaks volumes for the intentions and spirit of your practice and the artistic effectiveness of your design.
We work as a close pair, moving fluidly through locations with minimal interruption in a style similar to documentary filmmaking. We take every element of design, from the banal to the transcendental, and dive deep under the skin of a subject to reveal the maker’s touch. Our visual references are grounded in humanism and humour, from the precision of Jacques Tati and the minimalism of the Kaurismaki brothers, to the rich textures and colours of 1970s Japanese experimental cinema and cinematic classics such as Paris Texas and Blue Velvet. Reflecting carefully on process, materiality, angle and light, our films are a down-to-earth yet sophisticated record of a place or project in time.
