Divided by one

Stories of material, process, people and place.

Filmmaking begins with our introductory meeting; here we explore how we can add creative value to your artistic practice or project, whether a product, building or artwork. An important part of our process is engaging with you and your designs on a meaningful level long before we pick up the camera; through in-depth research and careful analysis, we uncover the human-scale stories that will inform your film’s narrative. Armed with a brief and shared vision, we sketch out a short creative approach - this comprises a proposed narrative and key concepts that will sit at the film’s core - alongside providing a cost estimate and agreed deliverables. We don’t often storyboard or script our films, as the narrative will naturally adapt and evolve during our time together, however our vision is clearly laid out in our creative approach.
Our approach to filmmaking is creative, considered and collaborative. We want to tell a fuller story, building a narrative around a team, an idea and a project that the public can connect with. We want to deepen their understanding of the passion, expertise and hard work that goes into these designs - into the structural, material and spatial choices that are made - so that they might perceive them differently and experience them in a new way. Our films serve as a complement to the detail and practical imagery required in attracting new clients, taking a step back from the specifics to offer a moment of quiet - but one that speaks volumes for the intentions and spirit of your practice and the artistic effectiveness of your design.

We work as a close pair, moving fluidly through locations with minimal interruption in a style similar to documentary filmmaking. We take every element of design, from the banal to the transcendental, and dive deep under the skin of a subject to reveal the maker’s touch. Our visual references are grounded in humanism and humour, from the precision of Jacques Tati and the minimalism of the Kaurismaki brothers, to the rich textures and colours of 1970s Japanese experimental cinema and cinematic classics such as Paris Texas and Blue Velvet. Reflecting carefully on process, materiality, angle and light, our films are a down-to-earth yet sophisticated record of a place or project in time.
